A quick dairy free hot chocolate you can make in the microwave. Made with cacao and maple syrup. Less sugar than the regular mix. A perfect sweet, calcium packed treat for kids and grown ups.
This is a simple recipe I made up for my 3 year old Emmalynn to enjoy this winter. It’s the perfect way to get in some calcium for the day and contains less sugar than your average chocolate milk or hot chocolate mix.
We use unsweetened original or vanilla almond milk, but any milk you choose will work. The additional nutritional boost comes from cacao. This is used in place of cocoa powder.
What is cacao powder? Cacao is similar to cocoa powder, but has more health benefits due to being less processed. Cacao contains flavanols that help with blood pressure and can reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also full of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. They may also provide protection again type 2 diabetes. Last, it has some fiber which helps with digestive health.
The sweetener of choice is maple syrup. While all sugar intake should be watched no matter the form, the is a less processed form that adds a subtle sweetness.
Healthier Hot Chocolate
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2-1tsp cacao powder
1-2tsp maple syrup
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Dash of cinnamon
Toppings- whipped cream, sprinkles
Heat milk in a microwave safe mug for 45 seconds to 1 minutes. (I do 45 seconds so that it’s not as hot for my 3 year old.)
Stir in the cacao, vanilla, cinnamon, and maypole syrup till well combined.
Top with whipped cream and sprinkles as desired. Emmy loves doing this part by herself.
